Apple to launch affordable iPhone 17e with upgraded chip

Apple is preparing to introduce a more affordable version of its upcoming smartphone lineup with the launch of the iPhone 17e, according to a latest report by Bloomberg. The device will be positioned as a lower-cost alternative within the iPhone 17 family, while still offering notable performance upgrades.

The iPhone 17e follows the strategy Apple adopted last year with the iPhone 16e, which was released as a budget-friendly option by incorporating older hardware components to keep production costs down. This approach allowed Apple to attract price-sensitive consumers without significantly compromising performance.

Unlike its predecessor, the iPhone 17e is expected to feature a more powerful processor, similar to the standard iPhone 17. The device will also include Apple’s in-house cellular and Wi-Fi chipsets, further reducing the company’s reliance on third-party suppliers and improving overall efficiency.

For the first time, the iPhone 17e will reportedly support wireless MagSafe charging, a feature previously limited to higher-end models. The addition is expected to make the entry-level iPhone more appealing to users looking for premium features at a lower price point.

Despite the upgrades, Apple is not expected to increase the price. The iPhone 17e is likely to retail at $599 or £599, the same price as the iPhone 16e, keeping it competitive in the global smartphone market.

Apple unveiled the iPhone 17 series in September 2025, which includes the standard iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The event was also marked by the debut of the iPhone Air, Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date at just 5.6mm, which drew widespread attention.

Alongside the new iPhones, Apple also launched the Apple Watch Series 11, featuring 5G connectivity, advanced health-monitoring tools, and satellite connectivity for the Apple Watch Ultra 3. The company also refreshed its entry-level smartwatch lineup with the Apple Watch SE 3, priced at $249 and offering an always-on display, faster processor, and 5G support.

With the iPhone 17e, Apple appears to be strengthening its focus on the mid-range smartphone segment, aiming to balance affordability with performance as competition in the global market intensifies.
