AWS outage 2025: Snapchat down, Fortnite and Prime Video hit in major global disruption

Millions of users across the world were left frustrated on Monday as a massive AWS outage 2025 disrupted major online platforms, taking down popular apps such as Snapchat, Fortnite, Coinbase, and Prime Video. Amazon Web Services, the cloud infrastructure powering some of the world’s biggest digital services, confirmed that it was experiencing increased “error rates and latencies” across multiple regions, leading to connectivity failures and app crashes.

Users from the United States, United Kingdom, and Asia reported that Snapchat was down for several hours, with many unable to send messages or access stories. The phrase “Snapchat down today” quickly began trending on X (formerly Twitter), as thousands of users voiced frustration over the platform’s global blackout. According to Amazon’s latest update, engineers were working on “multiple parallel paths” to accelerate recovery and stabilize affected systems.

This global AWS outage marks the first major internet disruption since last year’s CrowdStrike malfunction that crippled IT systems in hospitals, banks, and airports worldwide. AWS, which provides cloud hosting and data services to millions of organizations, faced widespread criticism for its dependency bottlenecks as digital platforms from gaming to fintech were knocked offline.

AI startup Perplexity, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, and trading app Robinhood also reported downtime, citing Amazon’s cloud issues as the cause. “Perplexity is down right now. The root cause is an AWS issue,” said CEO Aravind Srinivas in a statement. Amazon’s shopping platform, Prime Video, and voice assistant Alexa were also affected, according to outage-tracking site Downdetector.

The AWS outage 2025 didn’t just hit entertainment and tech — it extended to the financial and telecom sectors. British banks including Lloyds and the Bank of Scotland, along with telecom providers Vodafone and BT, confirmed service disruptions, while the UK tax authority HMRC’s website was temporarily inaccessible.

Gaming giants such as Epic Games’ Fortnite, Roblox, and Clash of Clans also suffered connection failures, leaving millions of players locked out of their accounts. Social media users also complained about intermittent issues with Snapchat, Signal, and other messaging apps relying on AWS infrastructure.

Despite widespread downtime, Elon Musk’s social media platform X appeared to be unaffected. “X works,” Musk posted, in what many users saw as a subtle jab at Amazon’s cloud dependency.

As of late evening, Amazon reported gradual recovery in several regions but did not provide an official explanation for the cause of the AWS outage 2025. Experts said the disruption underscores the risks of centralized cloud dependency in an increasingly digital economy, where a single provider’s failure can send ripple effects across global industries.
