Crackdown on PTI Leaders continue Despite Court Orders

The crackdown on PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) leaders shows no signs of letting up, with recent developments indicating a persistent targeting of party members. Despite a local court in Islamabad ordering the release of PTI female leaders Shireen Mazari and Senator Falak Naz, who were arrested in a case registered at the Tarnol police station, Mazari was rounded up for the third time shortly after her release.

In a separate incident, PTI spokespersons claimed that party leader Maleeka Ali Bokhari had been rearrested after being released from Adiala Jail and taken to an undisclosed location. While the Islamabad police refuted this claim, Media obtained a video of her arrest, raising questions about the contradictory statements.

Initially, the police presented Mazari and Naz before the court of Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Shabbir under tight security and requested their physical remand for three days. They argued that a case had been registered against both of them, including charges of murder and brandishing weapons.

However, after hearing arguments from both sides, the court dismissed the case against the PTI female leaders. Mazari, speaking to the media, expressed her frustration, stating that despite the high court ordering her release, she was arrested again outside the Adiala Jail. She revealed that she was first taken to the Diplomatic Enclave and later to the Secretariat police station.

Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb of the Islamabad High Court then ordered that Mazari and Naz should not be arrested in any case. Their lawyer, Advocate Zainab Janjua, emphasized that if no other cases were pending against her clients, the police should be barred from further arrests. The court requested case details from the police and instructed the provincial governments to refrain from illegally arresting the two PTI leaders. The hearing was adjourned until Thursday.

Mazari was once again arrested by the Islamabad police, marking her third arrest in this ongoing episode. Meanwhile, Justice Aurangzeb of the Islamabad High Court sought arrest records under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) for PTI leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Musarrat Cheema, Asad Umar, Saifullah Niazi, and Ejaz Chaudhry.

PTI Leaders Rearrested Shortly After Bail

Despite being granted bail by the Islamabad High Court (IHC), PTI leaders Shireen Mazari and Maleeka Bokhari found themselves back in custody mere hours after their release. Sources, speaking anonymously, revealed to the Media that Mazari was rearrested by women personnel of the Punjab Police under Section 4 of the Maintenance of Public Order. Confirming her mother’s third arrest, Mazari’s daughter, Imaan Mazari, took to Twitter, expressing frustration by stating, “They have taken her again.” In a video shared by Imaan, police officials were seen arriving outside the PTI leader’s residence prior to her arrest.

Furthermore, Maleeka Bokhari, another PTI leader, also faced a similar fate. Despite the IHC ordering her release, she was rearrested by the Punjab Police shortly after being freed from jail. According to police sources, Bokhari was apprehended outside Adiala Jail and subsequently taken to an undisclosed location. The ongoing crackdown on PTI leaders and workers is a result of their alleged involvement in the ransacking and torching of military and public properties following the arrest of party chief Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust case on May 9. The authorities have made it clear that those responsible for the attacks on defense installations will face trial under the Pakistan Army Act and Official Secrets Act, as they seek to address the grave implications of these incidents.

LHC released PTI workers

In a related development, the Lahore High Court released over 100 PTI activists and leaders by suspending their detention orders. This decision came after the court reviewed the cases of approximately 900 detained PTI members, highlighting the ongoing legal battles faced by the party and its supporters.

The continuous crackdown on PTI leaders has sparked concerns about the selective targeting of political figures. As the legal battles unfold, many will be closely observing the outcomes and implications for PTI and the political landscape in Pakistan.
