The cost of purchasing smartphones in Pakistan has become increasingly difficult due to the rising prices of the phones and the US dollar. This difficulty has been compounded by the PTA’s imposition of an unreasonable charge. However, the PTA has provided some relief to smartphone customers by allowing them to pay the certification tax in installments.
Retail pricing has gone out of control, with mid-range phones costing over Rs 100,000 and flagship phones costing over Rs 300,000. The additional burden of having to pay for PTA approvals further increases the stakes for the public.
A recent development has made it easier for people to access smartphones. Bank Alfalah’s e-marketplace, Alfa Mall, now allows installment payments based on PTA clearance for certain cellphones. The eligible phones include the Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Ultra, as well as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 series. The total PTA charges for these phones range from Rs 130,000 to Rs 190,000, but they can be paid off at a 0% markup over 3 to 6 months. All you need to do is select an installment payment plan, enter your CNIC number and phone’s IMEI code, and you’re all set.
It is worth mentioning here that the PTA clearance process may take three to five business days, and the shop will contact you to confirm your acceptance. However, this option will lower the burden of Pakistanis who want to purchase the new smartphone.
