Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro could mark a major leap in smartphone connectivity, with reports suggesting the device may introduce satellite-enabled 5G powered by the next-generation A20 chipset.
According to industry sources and a prominent Chinese tech leaker, Fixed Focus Digital — cited by Apple-focused outlet Apple Insider — Apple’s A20 chip is expected to include a second-generation in-house C2 modem capable of supporting NR-NTN (New Radio Non-Terrestrial Networks). This technology would enable devices to connect directly to satellite networks, potentially expanding internet access beyond traditional cellular infrastructure.
Currently, Apple offers limited satellite connectivity through its Emergency SOS via satellite feature, allowing users to send emergency messages when outside regular cellular coverage. However, the rumoured upgrade in the iPhone 18 Pro could go much further, enabling broader satellite-based internet access in remote and underserved areas without relying on nearby cell towers.
Earlier reports from The Information and Bloomberg have also indicated that Apple is working on expanding satellite communication capabilities in future iPhone models, reinforcing speculation that the company is aiming to reduce dependence on conventional telecom networks.
For full satellite-enabled 5G functionality, Apple would likely need to collaborate with a satellite network provider. Industry observers have pointed toward Starlink, operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, as a potential partner, although no formal agreement has been announced.
Beyond connectivity, the upgraded C2 modem is also expected to deliver improved power efficiency and deeper integration with Apple’s privacy features. Enhancements may include refined control over location data, building on options such as the “limit precise location” feature introduced in earlier iPhones.
