PTA Warns Against Sharing Illegal Content on Social Media Platforms

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strong warning to social media users against sharing or promoting illegal content on digital platforms, urging the public to exercise responsibility while engaging online.

In an official message released on Tuesday, a PTA spokesperson emphasised that while freedom of expression on digital platforms is a fundamental right, it cannot be misused to justify unlawful or harmful activities.

The authority clarified that content involving the desecration of religions, Prophethood, or sacred personalities, as well as incitement against individuals or state institutions, falls under criminal offences as defined in the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.

The PTA further stated that hateful or false propaganda targeting defence and other national institutions, along with the circulation of obscene, immoral material and the spread of fake news on social media platforms, is strictly prohibited and punishable under the law.

Calling for public cooperation, the authority appealed to citizens to report such content in the national interest and assist in maintaining peace and order. Users have been advised to submit complaints through the PTA’s Complaint Management System (CMS) mobile application.

Earlier, the PTA had also reminded telecom consumers to ensure that all SIM cards are registered in their own names. In a separate statement, the authority urged responsible use of telecommunications services, warning that using SIMs registered under another individual’s name is a violation of existing regulations and may result in legal consequences.

The PTA reiterated its commitment to promoting a safe, lawful and responsible digital environment across Pakistan.
