In a recent announcement, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has informed the public about an upcoming spell of heavy rainfall in several cities across Punjab and Sindh. This weather phenomenon is expected to persist for the next few days.
According to the Met Office, Punjab is likely to experience heavy rains until September 20. Cities that should be prepared for wet weather include Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, and Bahawalpur. Additionally, the regions of Lower Dir, Malakand, and Muzaffarabad are also expected to witness significant rainfall.
Karachi, which recently received some rain, is in for more precipitation. The met department reported rain in several areas of the city last night, and further rains are anticipated in various parts tonight. From September 18 (Monday) evening to September 20 (Wednesday), Karachi residents can expect the rainy conditions to persist.
Earlier today, Islamabad and Rawalpindi were greeted with heavy rain. While the rainfall is generally welcomed as a relief from the scorching heat, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has cautioned against potential flooding in rivers and landslides in the hilly terrain of Murree due to the heavy downpours.
The weather advisory explained that “moderate monsoon currents from the Bay of Bengal are likely to penetrate the upper regions of the country starting from the evening/night of September 15.” Additionally, the Met Office has predicted the arrival of a westerly wave on September 16.
The Met Office has issued important guidelines for the public to stay safe during these rainy days. Moderate to heavy rainfall may lead to increased water flows in local Nullahs/streams in various regions, including Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Galliyat, Murree, and Rawalpindi/Islamabad from September 17 to 19. Moreover, the possibility of landslides in vulnerable areas, such as Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Mansehra, and Abbottabad, is also a concern during the wet spell from September 16 to 19.
