Tragic Hospital Fire in Delhi Claims Lives of Six Newborns

Six newborn babies died after a fire broke out at a children’s hospital in Delhi, India. People rushed into the flames to save the babies, according to police on Sunday. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the fire and the deaths “heart-rending” on social media.

The fire department was alerted when the fire started at the hospital late Saturday evening. However, in the first few crucial minutes, it was bystanders who noticed the fire and bravely entered the blaze to rescue the newborns.

Senior police officer Surendra Choudhary said in a statement that all 12 newborn babies were rescued with the help of others, but unfortunately, six of them died by the time they received medical attention.

This incident happened just hours after another fire at an amusement park in Gujarat, India, which killed 27 people, including four children. That fire occurred in a crowded center with a bowling alley and other games. Police said many of the bodies were so badly burned that identification was difficult. Fires are common in India due to poor building practices, overcrowding, and a lack of safety regulations.

Choudhary mentioned that legal action is being taken against the hospital owner but did not provide more details on how the babies died. He also noted that one baby out of the 12 brought out of the ward had died before the fire started.

The fire happened at the New Born Baby Care hospital in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area. Delhi Fire Department Director Atul Garg told the Press Trust of India news agency that 14 fire trucks were sent to fight the blaze. He said the fire spread quickly because of a blast in an oxygen cylinder.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal described the situation as “heartbreaking” and expressed support for those who lost their children. He said on social media, “We all stand with those who lost their innocent children in this accident. The causes of the incident are being investigated, and whoever is responsible for this negligence will not be spared.”

Prime Minister Modi also offered his condolences to the grieving families. “My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this incredibly difficult time,” he wrote on social media. “I pray that those injured recover at the earliest.”
