60 feared dead as two buses swept away by landslide into river in Nepal. The incident occurred early Friday near Simaltar, about 120km west of Kathmandu. Three survivors managed to swim to safety after jumping into the Trishuli river and reaching the banks. Local residents transported them to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Authorities, including the military and police, launched rescue operations despite challenges posed by continuous rain and landslides blocking access routes. One bus, with 41 passengers heading from Kathmandu to Gaur, and another with 24 passengers from Birgunj to Kathmandu were involved. Additional passengers may have boarded along the way.
Since mid-June, Nepal has seen numerous casualties due to heavy monsoon rains causing landslides and flooding. On the same highway, another bus was struck by a landslide, resulting in the driver’s death. Rescue efforts and casualties from this incident were still being assessed.
Nepal experiences heavy rainfall during the monsoon season from June to September, leading to frequent landslides in its mountainous terrain.
