Saudi Arabia’s efforts in rebuilding Yemen

The recent ribbon-cutting ceremony at a hospital in southern Yemen, funded by Saudi Arabia, aimed to showcase the kingdom’s reconstruction efforts in the war-torn country. However, the contrasting scenes of dignitaries enjoying the newly refurbished cardiac wing while patients waited outside in sweltering heat highlights the immense challenges faced in rebuilding Yemen.

Saudi Arabia intervened in Yemen’s conflict eight years ago, mobilizing troops to restore the internationally recognized government and counter the Huthi rebels. Now, as the war has exacted a devastating toll on the population, the kingdom is emphasizing its commitment to peace and initiating large-scale reconstruction and development projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

The Saudi ambassador, Mohammed al-Jaber, expressed the goal of achieving a secure, stable, and developed Yemen through these initiatives. During a tour of Aden General Hospital, nearby apartments, and Aden’s international airport – all renovated under the Saudi-funded Yemen development program – al-Jaber emphasized the kingdom’s intentions.

However, the reality on the ground reveals the enormity of the task ahead. The war in Yemen has caused immense suffering, with hundreds of thousands of lives lost and millions displaced. The airstrikes conducted by the Saudi-led coalition have resulted in significant casualties among civilians, leaving Yemen’s healthcare infrastructure in shambles.

While the new hospital beds and equipment are appreciated, they fall short of meeting the needs of the population. Doctors, like Abdulwahab Al Matry, who work tirelessly to provide medical care, question whether these efforts are enough to address the scale of the crisis.

Saudi officials argue that their military intervention was necessitated by the threat posed by the Iran-backed Huthi rebels. High-profile attacks on Saudi oil facilities reinforced their concerns about national security. Yet, the consequences for Yemen and its people have been devastating, with extensive casualties and infrastructure damage.

Although a truce deal has reduced the intensity of the fighting, the Saudis now seek a lasting ceasefire. Recent talks between Saudi officials and Huthi representatives in Sanaa have yet to yield a new agreement, but there is a shared recognition of the importance of achieving peace.

Saudi Arabia’s Generous Contributions to Yemen’s Reconstruction Efforts

Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia is eager to promote its reconstruction drive, including substantial financial contributions to Yemen. A billion dollars was deposited in Yemen’s central bank, while a $600 million oil derivatives fund and $400 million worth of projects, such as the hospital and airport renovations, demonstrate the kingdom’s commitment to rebuilding.

However, critics argue that these efforts fall short of addressing the larger responsibility Saudi Arabia bears for its actions in Yemen. Human Rights Watch researcher Niku Jafarnia highlights the need for accountability and reparations, stressing that the damage caused by the Saudi-led coalition requires significant redress.

Aid groups echo this sentiment, emphasizing the long-term commitment Saudi Arabia and other nations involved in the conflict should demonstrate in supporting Yemen’s recovery. The Norwegian Refugee Council’s Yemen country director, Erin Hutchinson, emphasizes the importance of rebuilding what has been destroyed and assisting the millions of Yemeni civilians who have suffered as a result of the conflict.

As Saudi Arabia seeks to rebuild Yemen and promote its efforts, the magnitude of the task ahead cannot be understated. The country faces immense challenges in restoring infrastructure, providing healthcare, and addressing the long-term consequences of the war. Only by assuming full responsibility and meeting their obligations can Saudi Arabia contribute to the recovery and well-being of Yemen and its people.
