Punjab PDMA Flood Alert Amid Rising Indus River Levels
LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab on Monday issued a flood alert for the Taunsa Barrage on the Indus River as water levels continue to rise, posing a moderate flood risk to nearby areas.
According to a PDMA spokesperson, water discharge at Taunsa Barrage has reached 418,000 cusecs, with more inflow expected in the coming days. Authorities fear the situation could escalate if rainfall in the upstream catchment areas continues.
The PDMA Punjab has directed all relevant government departments to remain on high alert. In addition to Taunsa, minor flood conditions have also been reported at the Guddu and Sukkur barrages.
Emergency Measures in Place
The Director General of PDMA Punjab has ordered Rescue 1122, Local Government, Irrigation, Agriculture, and Health departments to complete emergency preparedness on a priority basis.
Departments including Forest, Livestock, and Transport have also been instructed to implement precautionary measures to protect lives, livestock, crops, and essential infrastructure.
“All precautionary measures must be implemented without delay, as per the Chief Minister Punjab’s directives,” said the PDMA chief. He further emphasized real-time updates to keep citizens informed about flood threats and safety protocols.
Public Safety Advisory
People living near the riverbanks have been urged to remain alert and follow official instructions to minimize risks. Citizens can contact the PDMA helpline at 1129 for any flood-related emergency.
