PTI trying to turn Pakistan into Sudan, says Ahsan Iqbal

Ahsan Iqbal, Pakistan’s Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, has criticized the social media team of the ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for conducting baseless smear campaigns aimed at creating chaos and instability in the country.
Speaking with journalists in Narowal, Iqbal accused PTI’s social media team of trying to turn Pakistan into Sudan through their fabricated campaigns, adding that the party should be ashamed of its anti-state narrative and activities.

Iqbal further criticized PTI’s Chairman, Imran Khan, alleging that he had committed embezzlement of Rs60 billion, which had been exposed. He also accused Khan of destroying the country’s economy and every institution through his governance. Iqbal called on PTI supporters to assess the developmental work that the party had done in Pakistan so far.

Referring to the Al-Qadir Trust case, Iqbal claimed that the money that came from Britain was transferred to the Supreme Court’s account, linking it with Khan receiving bail from the judiciary following his arrest earlier this week. The former prime minister was given blanket relief from the Islamabad High Court, barring authorities from arresting him in any case until Monday morning (May 15).

The former prime minister, who is embroiled in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case, has been granted bail for two weeks by a special two-member divisional bench. Additionally, the court has prohibited authorities from arresting him until May 17 for any new cases filed against him, up to May 9. The former prime minister requested temporary bail for four cases lodged against him in Lahore. In the Zille Shah murder case, the court granted him bail until May 22. Another bench has also ordered authorities not to arrest him until the morning of May 15 while hearing the bail petition for three terrorism cases.

Iqbal also called on Khan to stop running away from accountability and provide answers and receipts for his actions. The Pakistan Democratic Movement, a coalition of 13 opposition parties, plans to protest against the relief given to Khan in front of the Supreme Court on Monday. However, Iqbal assured that the government respects Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and the Supreme Court, despite the protests against discrimination towards other political groups in the country.

Couple of days ago, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) declared their intentions to hold protests across the country against the interim bail granted to former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. The protests are scheduled to take place in Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Gujranwala, and Kasur, with Maryam Nawaz leading the demonstration in Punjab’s provincial capital. Additionally, the PML-N has planned protests in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Quetta, and Karachi.

Party leader Nawaz Sharif has called for the mobilization of supporters for the protests. Meetings have also been scheduled in Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, and Rawalpindi to discuss the party’s strategy and plan of action.
