PDMA Warns of Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm on 9th and 10th Muharram in Punjab

LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority PDMA warns of heavy rain and thunderstorm On 9th and 10th Muharram across Punjab , urging residents and procession organizers to exercise maximum caution during this period of religious observance.

According to the PDMA spokesperson, the monsoon system is likely to intensify starting July 5, bringing widespread downpours to multiple districts, with southern and central Punjab expected to bear the brunt of the severe weather. Local administrations have been directed to remain on high alert to handle any emergency situation that may arise due to torrential rain or urban flooding.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia emphasized that special safety arrangements must be ensured for Muharram processions and gatherings. He appealed to organizers to strictly avoid staging events on unsafe rooftops and to keep a safe distance from electric poles and overhead wires, which can become hazardous during thunderstorms and strong winds.

Communities residing near rivers, canals, or low-lying areas have been advised to stay vigilant and avoid crossing water channels during heavy rain to reduce the risk of flash floods. Particular concerns have been raised for hilly and riverine regions, especially in Dera Ghazi Khan and other flood-prone districts.

Earlier this month, the Punjab government enforced Section 144 throughout the province from the 1st to 10th of Muharram, restricting unauthorized processions and large gatherings to ensure public safety and security. Only pre-approved processions and majalis will be allowed during these days, with local law enforcement directed to monitor compliance closely.

Tragically, the recent spell of monsoon rains in Punjab has already claimed several lives. According to PDMA data, 18 people — including children — lost their lives in various rain-related incidents in the last week, mostly due to collapsed roofs and electrocution. In Khanewal and Okara, two people were struck and killed by lightning, while Mandi Bahauddin reported the deaths of two children due to electric shocks.

The PDMA has once again urged citizens to stay informed through official updates, secure their homes against possible leaks or structural damage, and report any emergency situation to the nearest rescue office. Rescue teams and local administrations remain on standby to tackle any untoward incident as Muharram processions coincide with this active monsoon phase.

Residents are encouraged to plan any travel with extreme care, keep children indoors during storms, and follow local advisories to prevent avoidable accidents.

Authorities have stressed that public cooperation is vital to ensure that religious events can proceed safely despite the weather challenges posed by the ongoing monsoon.
