National Assembly to form committee for filing reference against CJP Bandial

The National Assembly will establish a committee to write a referral against CJP Bandial.

ISLAMABAD: During a parliamentary session, Pakistan’s National Assembly unanimously passed a motion calling for the formation of a special committee to file a misconduct reference against Chief Justice of Pakistan, Umar Ata Bandial, to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC).

The motion, which was moved by Pakistan Peoples Party’s Dr Shazia Sobia, accused Bandial of “misconduct and deviating from his oath”. Additionally, lawmakers strongly condemned the recent arson attacks on various buildings, including the Lahore Corps Commanders House and Radio Pakistan’s Peshawar office, and the damage caused to public and private properties by violent protesters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The parliamentarians demanded that PTI Chairman, Imran Khan, be tried under the Army Act for creating anarchy and commotion and damaging public and private properties. Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, addressed the parliament, stating that the time had come for it to play its constitutional role in the current situation.

He further alleged that the judiciary’s recent decisions were tantamount to political support and that a reference of misconduct must be sent to the SJC to take Khan to task. He also demanded the formation of another committee to examine the pending cases in the judiciary.

Earlier, the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial urged the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government to resume talks with the opposition. The call was made during a hearing of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) plea to review an order that had held the ECP responsible for conducting elections in Punjab on May 14.

The ECP had appealed the April 4 ruling by the three-member bench, comprising Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhtar, that had deemed the Commission’s decision to hold elections in Punjab on October 8, instead of April 30, illegal.
