KARACHI: Authorities have reported the arrest of a Pakistani expatriate residing in Sweden for his alleged involvement in the murder of a police constable in Clifton, Karachi in November 2022. The suspect, identified as Khurram Nisar, reportedly fled to Sweden following the killing.
Chief Minister’s Law Adviser, Murtaza Wahab, announced on social media that the man responsible for shooting and killing Constable Abdur Rehman had been apprehended in Stockholm. Syed Asad Raza, SSP-South, confirmed the arrest and revealed that the Swedish police were coordinating with their Karachi counterparts.
Efforts are underway to expedite the process of repatriating the suspect to Karachi for trial. Swedish media reports indicate that Charlotta Stege Unger, a senior prosecutor at the National Unit against International and Organised Crime, had decided to arrest Khurram Nisar in collaboration with Pakistani authorities. Expressen.se, a Swedish-language newspaper, quoted Stege Unger as affirming their ongoing cooperation with the Pakistani police in the investigation.
The Stockholm court ruled that Nisar should be detained as a suspect due to the risk of him fleeing the country during the murder investigation and potentially obstructing the process if not restricted from contacting the outside world. The suspect, however, denied his involvement in the crime during a detention hearing in Stockholm.
The incident leading to the murder occurred in November last year when two police officers on a routine patrol encountered the suspect’s vehicle in Clifton, Block-5. They suspected him of attempting to abduct a girl, and one of the officers entered the suspect’s car, resulting in a heated exchange. The confrontation escalated into an armed standoff, with the suspect refusing to go to a police station and ultimately firing at the officer, fatally injuring him.
