Mohsin Naqvi meets Ch Shujaat, orders probe into raid on PML-Q President’s residence

LAHORE: The caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, ordered an investigation into the police’s conduct at the Lahore residence of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Ch Shujaat Hussain.

Last week, the police and Anti Corruption Establishment (ACE) raided PTI President Ch Parvez Elahi’s Gulberg residence and arrested 12 individuals. The raiding party used an armored vehicle to break down the main gate of the residence after facing resistance. However, they could not find Elahi despite a thorough search.

During the raid, police officials tried to force their way into the adjoining residence of Shujaat, but they were confronted by his sons. Shujaat’s sons accused the police of shattering the glass at the main entrance of their house, injuring two of them. While Shujaat is part of the ruling coalition, Elahi’s political allegiances are on the opposite side of the aisle.

The federal government distanced itself from the police operation immediately after it was reported. In a phone call with PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar claimed that the federal coalition had nothing to do with the raid on Elahi’s house. He also expressed concern and alleged that the police action was orchestrated by the caretaker government.

In response to the incident, Shujaat criticized the Punjab police and called for those responsible for the matter to be brought to light and justice.

Naqvi, the interim CM, visited Shujaat’s Zahoor Elahi residence in Lahore to check up on his son, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, who is also a federal minister of Pakistan. During the meeting, Naqvi apologised for the events and took details of the incident from Shujaat’s sons.

The interim CM ordered an inquiry into the incident, assuring those present that the responsible individuals would be identified, and action would be taken against them without discrimination. Naqvi further emphasized that petrol bombs were thrown at the police during the raid at Parvez Elahi’s residence and reiterated that no one should be allowed to take the law into their hands and attack law enforcement personnel.

After the meeting, Shujaat expressed his gratitude to Naqvi for visiting his house. The press release issued by the Punjab government highlighted that the interim CM, along with the province’s police chief and chief secretary, was present during the meeting. Naqvi emphasized that the law is equal for all and that appropriate action will be taken against anyone who violated it.

The investigation into the police’s actions at Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain’s residence is a welcome step towards accountability. The interim CM’s visit and apology demonstrate the government’s commitment to ensuring that justice is served. It is essential to ensure that no one is above the law and that law enforcement personnel are not subjected to any harm while executing their duties.
