Imran Khan says he could be arrested anytime despite securing bail from IHC

LAHORE: Former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, finds himself embroiled in a tense standoff with authorities as they surround his house. Khan recently spoke to foreign TV channel in his first interview since the police deadline expired, shedding light on what he perceives as an “unprecedented crackdown” occurring in Pakistan.
During the conversation, Khan expressed his belief that he will likely face rearrest in the near future. He highlighted that a significant number of his party workers, approximately 7,500, have already been arrested, along with the entire senior leadership. Uncertain of the exact course of events, Khan declared, “So what will happen? I don’t know. But I expect to be rearrested,” as he spoke from Lahore.
In Khan’s view, this crackdown represents an attempt to suppress the PTI and prevent them from participating in the upcoming elections. He claims that the motive behind these actions is to dismantle the party and prevent it from participating in the elections, thereby suppressing its influence.
Contradicting Khan’s expectation of rearrest, Amir Mir, Punjab’s Information Minister, stated during a news conference that there are no plans to reapprehend the former prime minister. Mir clarified that their primary objective is for Khan to hand over the terrorists allegedly hiding within his residence. According to Mir, intelligence and law enforcement agencies have identified up to 40 individuals accused of attacking military installations during recent unrest as being concealed at Khan’s home.
Khan vehemently dismissed these allegations as “absolute nonsense” during his interview with DW. He explained that he took a proactive step to defuse the situation by inviting journalists to his home, providing them the opportunity to verify the absence of terrorists. He clarified that he diffused the situation by inviting authorities to his residence to witness for themselves that there were no terrorists present. This action resulted in the police being unable to take any further action due to the evident absence of terrorists.
While police officers remain stationed around Khan’s house, their numbers have considerably diminished since their initial deployment on Wednesday, as per Khan’s account.
