Bushra Bibi to file case against Maryam Nawaz over Corruption Accusations

LAHORE: In a recent development, Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, has decided to file a criminal case against Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz for defamation, according to Pakistan Tehkreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Fawad Chaudhry. The announcement was made during a press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday.

Chaudhry said that Maryam had accused Bushra Bibi of accepting bribes in exchange for getting official documents signed during the previous PTI-led government, even though she is an apolitical person who has never participated in any political activities. He added that despite being a non-political figure, Maryam continued to make baseless allegations against her. Therefore, Bushra Bibi has decided to send a legal notice to Maryam Nawaz, which will be followed by the filing of a criminal case against the PML-N leader.

Maryam Nawaz, who is also the chief organizer of the PML-N, has repeatedly accused Bushra Bibi of receiving bribes, including a diamond set, in exchange for using her influence during the tenure of the Imran Khan-led government. Maryam alleged that Farhat Shezadi, a close associate of Bushra Bibi, was involved in corruption during the tenure of the former chief minister Usman Buzdar.

During the same press conference, Fawad Chaudhry also lashed out at Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja, alleging that the latter is acting as a “crony” of the ruling alliance. He claimed that the CEC had purchased four kanals of land for the election commission office in Sargodha for 320 million, despite the government claiming that there was no money for elections. Fawad Chaudhry said that Senator Ejaz Chaudhary had previously filed a reference against the CEC, but no action was taken. He added that the PTI is sending a new reference against the chief election commissioner and demanded his dismissal, claiming that he is part of the conspiracy to deprive people of their right to vote.

The legal action against Maryam Nawaz and the criticism of the CEC come at a time when the PTI-led government is facing various challenges, including a rise in inflation, unemployment, and social unrest. The move to take legal action against a political leader is also likely to escalate tensions between the ruling party and the opposition, which have been at loggerheads since the last general election. The case against Maryam Nawaz may also have wider implications for freedom of expression and the media in Pakistan, as it raises questions about the limits of political criticism and the use of defamation laws to silence dissenting voices.
