Another Train Derails in Odisha Just 3 Days after Devastating Crash

Another train derailment has occurred in India’s Odisha, just three days after a devastating three-train collision that resulted in the country’s deadliest railway accident in two decades, claiming 275 lives and injuring over 1,000. The latest incident took place in Bargarh, while the previous collision happened in Balasore, with both cities located approximately 450 kilometers apart.

Fortunately, this time, no casualties were reported as the derailed train was a private goods train carrying limestone. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, according to Hindustan Times. The East Coast Railway (ECoR) clarified that the incident involved some wagons of a goods train operated by a private cement factory, which derailed within the factory premises near Mendhapali in the Bargarh district, as reported by the Deccan Herald. ECoR emphasized that the Railways had no involvement in this matter, as it was a narrow gauge siding maintained entirely by the private cement company, including the infrastructure and rolling stock such as engines, wagons, and train tracks.

Meanwhile, railway teams have been tirelessly working to restore the tracks following India’s deadliest train crash in decades. The tragic incident has sparked renewed concerns about safety in one of the world’s largest railway networks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spearheaded a $30 billion railway infrastructure modernization plan to enhance India’s economy and connectivity, recognizing trains as the preferred and most cost-effective mode of long-distance travel for both people and goods.

During his visit to the site of the triple-train collision in Balasore, where he witnessed the wreckage and extended condolences to the families of the victims, Prime Minister Modi was scheduled to launch a modern electric train equipped with state-of-the-art safety features designed to prevent collisions. However, the incident underscored the challenges and shortcomings of India’s complex and often outdated railway system.

According to former top railways official Subodh Jain, “Pure operational failures are not uncommon on Indian railways.” He acknowledged that safety mechanisms have improved significantly but emphasized that there is still progress to be made. Indian Railways, the world’s fourth-largest rail network, operates approximately 14,000 trains daily, supported by 8,000 locomotives, across a vast network of tracks spanning about 64,000 kilometers (40,000 miles). With official figures indicating that the network carries more than 21 million passengers each day, it faces immense pressure in a country that recently became the world’s most populous.

The frequency of such accidents highlights the need for continued efforts to enhance the safety and infrastructure of India’s railway system. While significant investments have been made to modernize and upgrade the network, there is a clear recognition that more work needs to be done. The safety and well-being of passengers and railway employees must remain a top priority, and comprehensive measures should be implemented to prevent future accidents and ensure the efficient operation of the railway system.

As India’s population continues to grow, the demand for rail transportation will only increase. It is essential for the government and relevant authorities to address the existing challenges, implement advanced safety measures, and upgrade the infrastructure to meet the growing needs of the nation. A safe and reliable railway network will not only facilitate economic growth but also provide a secure and efficient means of transportation for millions of people across the country.
