The much-anticipated Hajj pilgrimage for the year 2023 is just around the corner, and preparations are in full swing in Pakistan. As per the latest updates, the training program for pilgrims will commence from April 28 in Lahore, Sialkot, and Faisalabad. This comes after the federal government announced that there will be no balloting for Hajj this year due to the low number of applications received compared to the available quota.
The Director of Lahore, Iqrar Ahmed, stated that the training program will be conducted for approximately 28,000 pilgrims who are set to embark on this sacred journey. The training is an essential part of the comprehensive such operation, as it equips pilgrims with the necessary knowledge and guidance to perform the pilgrimage rituals safely and accurately.
The Hajj pilgrimage is one of the five pillars of Islam, and it is mandatory for all able-bodied Muslims who can afford it to perform this at least once in their lifetime. Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world travel to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia to perform, a journey that holds immense spiritual significance for them.

Pakistan has a significant number of pilgrims who perform Hajj each year. The government of Pakistan, in collaboration with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and other private carriers, arranges for the transportation of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia. This year, the quota for Pakistani pilgrims for 2023 is 179,210, and it is noteworthy that the government of Saudi Arabia has restored the number of pilgrims to pre-Covid levels, allowing more pilgrims to perform Hajj compared to the previous year.

It is interesting to note that 50 percent of the Hajj quota has been reserved for the Sponsorship Scheme, which is a special facility for pilgrims seeking foreign exchange from abroad in the specific dollar account of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Pakistan. The Sponsorship Scheme was introduced to inject foreign currency into the country’s dwindling foreign exchange reserves, and it was announced that those who deposit money in foreign currency would not have to go through the balloting process.

However, despite the apparent allure of the Sponsorship Scheme, the number of pilgrims opting for it has been relatively low this year. As per reports, only 72,869 applications were received against a quota of 44,190 for the regular scheme, and the number of vacant seats under the Sponsorship scheme was 10,000. This indicates that a significant number of seats allocated under the Sponsorship Scheme remained unoccupied, raising concerns about the effectiveness of this initiative.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs has also faced financial challenges in arranging for the Hajj pilgrimage this year. The Ministry contacted the Ministry of Finance and requested an additional $235 million to send pilgrims. This highlights the financial burden associated with organizing the pilgrimage and the need for effective financial planning to ensure smooth operations and facilitation of pilgrims.

The training program for pilgrims is a crucial step in preparing them for the Hajj pilgrimage. During the training, pilgrims are provided with information and guidance on various aspects of Hajj, including the performance of rituals, safety measures, health and hygiene, and other important instructions. The training is conducted by experienced instructors and scholars who educate pilgrims on the significance and proper way of performing the Hajj pilgrimage according to the teachings of Islam.
