In one of the biggest burglary incidents reported in Karachi this year, unidentified thieves looted gold and diamonds worth over Rs300 million from a jewellery shop in Orangi Town, police confirmed on Sunday.
The incident occurred at a well-known jewellery store located in Iqbal Market. According to initial investigations, the suspects dug a hole through the rear wall of the shop and managed to steal more than 606 tolas of gold along with diamonds valued at over Rs2.5 million.
A case has been registered against unknown individuals on the complaint of the shop owner, Ayub Khan, while police have begun a detailed investigation into the high-value heist. CCTV footage of the incident has also surfaced and is being examined by investigators to trace the suspects.
According to the complainant, shop workers had closed the store as usual on the night of February 12. However, when employees reopened the shop on the morning of February 14, they discovered several jewellery boxes empty.
Ayub Khan told police that upon reaching the shop, he found the rear wall broken. A subsequent inventory check revealed that approximately 7,064 grams of gold, along with diamonds and other valuables, had been stolen. Some of the missing jewellery reportedly belonged to customers, further intensifying the financial impact of the crime.
Police officials said forensic teams have collected evidence from the site, and CCTV footage from surrounding areas is also being reviewed. Authorities are investigating whether the burglary was carried out by a professional gang with prior knowledge of the shop’s layout.
The massive gold heist has once again raised concerns over security arrangements in commercial markets of Karachi, particularly in densely populated areas like Orangi Town.
