Lahore: No Evidence of University Pressure in Student Suicide Attempt, Police Say

Lahore no evidence of university pressure in student suicide attempt

Lahore no evidence of university pressure in student suicide attempt has emerged so far, police said on Tuesday, as authorities continue investigating two reported suicide attempts at the University of Lahore within the past 15 days.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran, speaking to ARY News in Lahore, said serious concerns have been raised following the incidents, prompting a detailed investigation by law enforcement agencies. He confirmed that police have questioned the injured student’s classmates as well as members of the university administration as part of the inquiry.

According to DIG Faisal Kamran, no evidence has surfaced indicating that the student faced pressure related to attendance requirements or any other administrative issue from the University of Lahore. He added that statements recorded from classmates have also not pointed toward any institutional problem linked to the incident.

The DIG said it is possible that the student may have been dealing with domestic or personal stress, adding that investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the case. He confirmed that the student sustained severe injuries to her legs as a result of the fall.

Police in Lahore are also examining the student’s mobile phone and call detail records (CDRs), with further facts expected to emerge after technical analysis is completed. DIG Faisal Kamran revealed that investigators have obtained five separate CCTV footages from the university premises, all of which reportedly show the student jumping. The footage is currently under review.

Emphasising the importance of preventive measures, the DIG said universities must take responsibility if any student is suffering from mental stress and ensure timely support. He advised educational institutions in Lahore to deploy staff near CCTV-monitored areas to improve supervision and help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Meanwhile, the University of Lahore has constituted an eight-member inquiry committee to probe the reported suicide attempt by a female student, identified as Fatima. According to the university administration, the committee will be headed by retired Dean of the Faculty of Law Muhammad Bilal Khan, and an official notification has been issued in this regard.

Other members of the committee include Dr. Mughis, Dr. Ahmad Bilal, Farukh Hafeez, Dr. Ayesha Mahmood, Ali Aslam, Muhammad Amir, and Ismahan Ramzan. University officials confirmed that Muhammad Amir and Ismahan Ramzan are classmates of the student involved in the incident.

The committee has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation and submitting a detailed report upon completion of the inquiry, as police investigations into the matter continue in Lahore.
