Gulshan Town Denies Responsibility for NIPA Manhole Tragedy in Karachi

Gulshan Town denies responsibility for NIPA manhole tragedy

In the aftermath of the NIPA manhole tragedy, Gulshan Town denies responsibility for the NIPA manhole tragedy, with the Municipal Commissioner formally informing the Sindh Local Government Department through a detailed letter issued on Tuesday. The commissioner clarified that the location where the child fell into an open manhole does not lie within the administrative boundaries of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town. According to the correspondence, the precise site of the incident falls outside Gulshan-e-Iqbal’s jurisdiction, countering claims circulating on social media.

The letter further explained that University Road, where the tragic incident occurred, is under the supervision of the Municipal Corporation (MC). All construction and development activities along this artery fall within the MC’s domain, while responsibility for the sewerage network rests with the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board. Officials stated that attributing the tragedy to Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town was inaccurate and not supported by ground realities.

Following the incident, Karachi’s civic agencies initiated rapid inspections in multiple localities. After Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town’s clarification, Lyari Town authorities also activated emergency measures, directing teams to conduct a thorough survey of open manholes across the town. The Municipal Commissioner of Lyari Town instructed officials to immediately repair damaged manhole covers and install new ones where required, stressing that such negligence could pose severe risks, especially to children.

The Commissioner urged all union councils in Lyari to expedite repairs and ensure that manhole covers remain secure at all times. Local chairmen, vice-chairmen, and councilors have been tasked with monitoring repair work within their respective areas to prevent future incidents.
