Exceptionally high flood in Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala till Sept 10: FFD

Exceptionally high flood in Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala to continue till Sept 10, warns FFD

LAHORE: The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) has warned that the Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala will remain in an “exceptionally high flood” condition until September 10, keeping thousands of residents in downstream districts at risk.

According to the latest advisory, the flood situation in the Sutlej has persisted for weeks, with continuous water inflows from India’s Harike and Ferozepur headworks. Officials said the river system is under close monitoring as the high water flow is expected to sustain throughout the coming week.

The FFD also cautioned that the Chenab River at Panjnad is likely to face a “very high flood” starting tomorrow, raising fears of further inundation in South Punjab districts. Meanwhile, the Indus River at Guddu Barrage is forecast to reach “high to very high” flood levels between September 6 and 7, a situation that could pose serious challenges to Sindh’s flood preparedness.

Despite the warnings, the FFD indicated some relief may be on the horizon as monsoon rains are expected to lessen within the next 24 hours. However, officials stressed that the cumulative river flows remain dangerously high, and authorities must continue to maintain emergency measures across Punjab and Sindh.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has already issued high alerts for vulnerable districts, urging residents in low-lying areas to move to safer locations.
