India releases more water into Sutlej, to reach Pakistan in 48 hrs
LAHORE – September 2, 2025: Authorities confirmed on Tuesday that India has released between 2,50,000 and 3,00,000 cusecs of water into the Sutlej River, with the flow expected to reach Pakistan within the next 48 hours.
According to irrigation officials, the water was released from India’s Pong and Bakhra dams, and the information was formally conveyed to Islamabad through the Indian High Commission.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA Punjab) has issued a high alert for districts adjacent to the Sutlej, warning of possible inundation. The districts most at risk include Kasur, Okara, Bahawalnagar, Pakpattan, Vehari, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Muzaffargarh.
Officials noted that the Sutlej has already been experiencing exceptionally high floods at Ganda Singh Wala Headworks for the past month. The river remains in high flood at Head Sulemanki, while the Chenab River is also in high flood at Trimmu Headworks, with the flow expected to reach Multan later this evening.
Flood streams from Ravi and Chenab Rivers, estimated at 6,50,000 cusecs, are expected to pass through the region, further worsening the flood situation. Meanwhile, the Indus River is carrying a large flood flow, which could enter Sindh by September 6–7, according to officials. Currently, the river is at low flood levels at Sindh’s Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri barrages.
