Lahore ATC Sends Imran Khan Nephew Shahrez to Jail | May 9 Case Update
LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court on Saturday ordered that PTI founder Imran Khan nephew Shahrez Khan be sent to jail in connection with the Jinnah House attack case stemming from the May 9, 2023 riots.
Shahrez, the son of Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, was arrested on August 21 from his mother’s residence in Lahore. His brother, Shershah Khan, was detained a day later in a similar case and has also been sent to jail following physical remand.
On Saturday, Shahrez was produced before ATC Judge Manzer Ali Gill at the end of his eight-day physical remand. Prosecutor Imtiaz Ahmad Sipra requested an extension of 30 days in police custody, citing the need to verify Shahrez’s social media accounts and continue investigation.
The defence team, led by counsel Rana Mudassar Umer and PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, opposed the request. They argued that no recovery had been made and that the investigation was already complete. They urged the court to discharge Shahrez, terming his arrest “illegal.”
Judge Gill rejected the prosecution’s plea for extended custody and ordered Shahrez to be sent to jail on judicial remand until September 13. The court also directed the investigating officer to submit a charge sheet by that date.
During the hearing, the prosecution informed the court that a teargas cane had been recovered from Shahrez and that his photogrammetry test had been conducted. The defence denied the claim, presenting affidavits, photographs, and travel records to show that Shahrez was in Chitral from May 7 to May 12, 2023, and was not present in Lahore during the May 9 riots.

The bail application filed by Shahrez’s counsel is expected to be taken up in the coming days, as the case continues to draw attention due to his family ties with the PTI founder.
