Man Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison for Acid Attack on Sister in Karachi

KARACHI: A man sentenced to 14 years in prison for acid attack on sister in Karachi after a Gender-Based Violence Court announced its verdict on Saturday, imposing strict punishment and financial penalties on the convict.

Additional Sessions Judge South handed down the sentence to Muhammad Ramzan, who was found guilty of attacking his sister in 2022 in Karachi’s Manzoor Colony. Along with the jail term, the court also imposed a fine of Rs1 million on the convict.

According to the prosecution, Ramzan had chased his sister outside her home before throwing acid on her. When her sons intervened to protect her, Ramzan attacked them with a knife, injuring both. The court also imposed two separate four-year prison terms for stabbing the nephews, along with an additional Rs400,000 in compensation.

The judge ordered Ramzan to pay Rs50,000 directly to his sister as compensation for the attack.

This acid attack case is part of Pakistan’s rising trend of gender-based violence, which courts are increasingly addressing with strict punishments.

Meanwhile, in a separate case earlier today, Karachi police apprehended a man accused of murdering his wife in the Soldier Bazar area. The suspect, identified as Qamar Abidi, was detained after inconsistencies in his statements and testimony from his six-year-old daughter, who claimed her father was present at home during the incident. Investigators later recovered blood-stained clothes belonging to the accused.

These back-to-back cases have raised concerns about the growing incidents of domestic violence and gender-based crimes in Karachi, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of laws and better protection for women.
