406 people die, 245 injured in KP rainfall and flash floods
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has confirmed that 406 people have died and 245 others injured in KP rainfall and flash floods, which wreaked havoc across several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to PDMA’s detailed factsheet, the death toll includes 167 women and 108 children, while the injured comprise 121 men, 92 women, and 32 children.
The highest number of casualties was recorded in Buner district, where 237 people lost their lives and 128 sustained injuries. Other heavily affected areas include Swabi with 42 deaths, Shangla with 36, and Mansehra with 25 fatalities. In Bajaur, 22 people were killed, while Swat reported 20 deaths due to flooding.
The PDMA stated that the rainfall and flash floods destroyed 674 houses and partially damaged 2,136 others, bringing the total to 2,810 affected properties. The worst-hit district, Buner, alone saw 1,469 houses damaged.
Education infrastructure also suffered greatly, with 324 schools affected, including 18 completely destroyed. Moreover, 5,916 livestock perished, adding to the financial strain on flood-hit communities.
Authorities have deployed emergency response teams to rescue stranded residents and provide medical aid. PDMA has urged citizens to stay away from rivers and low-lying areas as more rain is expected in the coming days.
These devastating figures underline the urgent need for climate resilience and stronger disaster management policies in Pakistan, as KP continues to face recurring natural disasters.
