Glacier Burst in Ghizer Creates Artificial Lake GB, Triggers Evacuation
CHILAS: A glacier burst in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Ghizer district created an artificial lake on Friday, blocking the River Ghizer’s flow for nearly eight hours and triggering emergency evacuations. The outburst took place near Tali Das and Rawshan villages in Gupis Valley, causing widespread destruction in downstream areas.
According to Rescue 1122, more than 200 residents were evacuated from flood-hit zones and shifted to safer areas in Yangal and Samal villages of Gupis Tehsil. Several houses were destroyed, while medical aid is being provided to the affected families.
Local reports said that a shepherd raised the alarm after noticing the sudden formation of the glacial lake, allowing residents to flee in time and preventing potential casualties. Officials confirmed that despite heavy financial losses, timely alerts from police and volunteers minimized the human toll.
Gilgit-Baltistan government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said nearby villages remain vulnerable as the glacier burst blocked the river, forming a fragile natural dam. He stressed that although some water has started flowing through the barrier, the risk of a sudden breach still threatens downstream settlements.
Chief Minister GB Haji Gulbar Khan immediately ordered relief and rescue measures, directing officials to coordinate with Pak Army units if required. Rescue 1122 and GBDMA teams remain on site, continuing relief operations amid ongoing risk.
Experts warn that such glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) in Gilgit-Baltistan are increasing due to climate change and rising global temperatures, posing long-term risks to mountain communities.
