Flooded Roads in Karachi Disrupt Daily Life as Death Toll Rises to 8

Karachi, August 20, 2025 — The aftermath of heavy monsoon rains has left Karachi’s residents struggling with urban flooding, power outages, and road blockages, while the death toll from rain-related incidents has tragically climbed to eight, according to official rescue services.

Rainwater accumulated across multiple major roads in the city, including Sharea Faisal, M.A. Jinnah Road, I.I. Chundrigarh Road, and Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road, disrupting daily life and bringing traffic to a standstill. The flooding also exposed the city’s fragile infrastructure as stormwater drains overflowed, sewers burst, and several neighborhoods faced hours-long electricity and internet blackouts.

Public Holiday and Emergency Declared

In light of the severe situation, the Sindh government announced a public holiday in Karachi today, ordering all private and public educational institutions to remain closed. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab declared a rain emergency and urged citizens to avoid unnecessary movement, warning that more showers were expected in the afternoon.

On social media, Wahab shared videos of certain cleared routes, but Karachi Traffic Police maintained that several underpasses and bypasses remained blocked, including Shaheed-i-Millat Road, Tariq Road Underpass, Drigh Road Underpass, Nazimabad Underpasses, and Korangi Crossing. Citizens were advised to contact the traffic helpline 1915 for alternative routes.

Rising Death Toll and Rescue Efforts

According to Rescue 1122, two more lives were lost today, adding to six fatalities reported on Tuesday.

  • 50-year-old Abbas Mohsin’s body was recovered from a nullah near Gurumandir.
  • 19-year-old Yasir, a motorcycle rider, died from electrocution in DHA Phase 5.

Meanwhile, a man and woman were injured in Ranchore Line after part of an old building collapsed. Several families were also devastated when four members, including children, died in Gulistan-i-Jauhar after their home’s walls caved in during the downpour.

Power Outages and Flight Disruptions

The torrential rains also caused widespread power breakdowns, affecting both residential and upscale areas like DHA and Clifton. K-Electric confirmed restoration in some neighborhoods, but warned that fuel supply disruptions were delaying repair operations.

Flight operations at Jinnah International Airport were disrupted, with several flights either delayed, cancelled, or diverted to other airports due to adverse weather conditions.

Climate Change Concerns

Mayor Wahab stressed that climate change is a harsh reality, pointing out that extreme monsoon rains had also wreaked havoc in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, and northern areas in recent weeks. He urged citizens to recognize the larger challenge rather than simply criticizing the administration.

PMD Forecasts More Heavy Rains

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh alert, forecasting more torrential rains in Karachi, Sindh, and parts of Balochistan until August 22. Authorities have warned of possible urban flooding in low-lying areas, urging citizens to remain cautious.

This is a developing story, and further updates will follow as the situation evolves. Stay updated with MegaNews.tv for the latest on Karachi rains and nationwide weather alerts.
