Mediators Await Israeli Response to New Gaza Truce Proposal After Hamas Agreement

Mediators are awaiting the Israeli response to a new ceasefire proposal in Gaza after Hamas accepted the plan and indicated willingness to move forward with negotiations. The development, reported Tuesday, comes nearly two years into a war that has seen repeated but failed efforts to establish a lasting truce.

The negotiations, conducted indirectly, have involved multiple rounds of shuttle diplomacy led by Egypt and Qatar with the support of the United States. Previous attempts brought about two short-term truces and exchanges of hostages for Palestinian prisoners but fell short of delivering a permanent ceasefire.

On Monday, Egyptian officials confirmed that along with Qatar they had formally submitted a fresh proposal to Israel. “The ball is now in its court,” Cairo announced, signaling that the next move lies with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. According to Egyptian media, the suggested framework includes a 60-day ceasefire, partial release of hostages, freedom for certain Palestinian prisoners, and provisions for humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza.

While Hamas has agreed to the proposal, Israeli leaders have not publicly commented on it. Last week, Netanyahu said Israel would only accept “an agreement in which all the hostages are released at once and according to our conditions for ending the war.” This stance has raised doubts about whether the latest plan will be acceptable to Tel Aviv.

Senior Hamas figure Mahmoud Mardawi posted that his group has “opened the door wide to the possibility of reaching an agreement,” while questioning if Netanyahu would once again shut it as in previous attempts. The timing is significant, as the Israeli leader faces mounting domestic and international pressure to end the prolonged conflict.

In Tel Aviv on Sunday, tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets demanding both an end to the war and the safe release of remaining Israeli hostages. The protests underline growing frustration among Israeli citizens, who want progress on negotiations rather than indefinite continuation of military operations.

The coming days are expected to be crucial, with international mediators closely watching Israel’s decision. The outcome could determine whether the region moves closer to peace talks or plunges deeper into prolonged conflict.
