Gilgit Tourists Airlifted by C-130 Amid Flood Emergency in Pakistan

Gilgit Tourists Airlifted by C-130 as NDMA Responds to Flood Emergency

GILGIT – In a swift response to the devastating flood situation in northern Pakistan, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has initiated a special operation to airlift stranded domestic and foreign tourists from Gilgit-Baltistan using a Pakistan Air Force C-130 aircraft.

The emergency flight, scheduled for Thursday, July 24, 2025, comes amid days of relentless monsoon rains that have triggered flash floods, blocked roads, and disrupted all forms of land transport in the scenic mountainous region.

According to officials from the local administration, arrangements are now in place for the safe evacuation of tourists who have been stuck in the region due to flood-damaged infrastructure. The administration has requested all individuals who wish to board the flight to immediately submit their complete details, including full name, father’s or husband’s name, and CNIC number.

Those requiring assistance or more information are advised to contact the Additional Deputy Commissioner’s office in Gilgit.

The NDMA’s emergency response comes as part of a broader nationwide alert following intense monsoon activity that has caused widespread disruption and tragic loss of life. In its latest update, the NDMA confirmed that at least 13 people died and 13 others were injured in rain-related incidents across the country in the last 24 hours alone.

Punjab province recorded the highest number of casualties, with seven deaths, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported three fatalities. Islamabad documented two deaths, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir reported one.

The NDMA also issued warnings of continued heavy rainfall, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone valleys and hilly regions.

This emergency evacuation from Gilgit highlights the critical role of the military and civil authorities in managing disaster relief and protecting the thousands of tourists who visit the region during the summer season. Gilgit-Baltistan, known for its majestic mountains and picturesque landscapes, attracts both Pakistani and international travelers, but the ongoing monsoon season has turned the journey into a dangerous ordeal.

Many tourists who had traveled to Skardu, Hunza, Fairy Meadows, and Naltar have been unable to return due to washed-out roads, landslides, and disrupted communications. With more rain forecasted in the coming days, further rescue missions may be required if road restoration efforts are delayed.

The C-130 flight evacuation not only offers a lifeline to those stranded but also demonstrates the NDMA’s commitment to timely crisis response. As the situation develops, the NDMA continues to monitor the weather and coordinate with local authorities, disaster relief teams, and the Pakistan Air Force.
