Bangladesh Air Force Plane Crashes into College Campus in Dhaka

DHAKA – July 21, 2025:
Tragedy struck the Bangladeshi capital on Monday as a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into a college campus in Uttara, a northern suburb of Dhaka, killing one person and injuring more than 50 others, according to fire and medical officials.

The aircraft, identified as an F-7 BGI fighter jet, took off from an air base at 13:06 local time (0706 GMT) and crashed shortly afterward.

Flames, Chaos, and Mass Injuries Reported

According to reports, the jet slammed into the roof of a college canteen, triggering a massive fireball and thick plumes of smoke that were visible across the city. Eyewitness videos shared on social media showed onlookers screaming in panic as flames engulfed parts of the building.

Dr. Samia Rahman of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery confirmed that more than 50 people, including students, teachers, and children, had been hospitalized with burn injuries ranging from mild to critical.

Government Response and Investigation Ordered

Muhammad Yunus, the interim Prime Minister of Bangladesh, expressed deep sorrow and assured the public that a high-level investigation had been ordered to determine the cause of the crash.

“The loss suffered by the Air Force, students, teachers, and families is irreparable,” Yunus said. “All necessary measures are being taken to provide assistance to the victims.”

The military’s public relations wing released a statement confirming the crash but noted that the cause remains unknown and the death toll may rise as further assessments are conducted.

Incident Echoes Recent Aviation Tragedies

This crash comes barely a month after a devastating Air India disaster where a commercial flight crashed into a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad, killing 241 out of 242 onboard and 19 on the ground — marking one of the deadliest air disasters in the last decade.

While the Bangladeshi crash involved a training aircraft and had significantly fewer fatalities, it has sparked renewed concerns about aviation safety in South Asia, especially around populated zones.

Area Cordoned Off, Campus Closed

Security forces have cordoned off the site in Uttara, and classes at the affected college have been suspended indefinitely. Rescue operations continued late into the evening as officials searched for survivors or further casualties in the debris.

Conclusion

The Bangladesh air force plane crash into a college campus has left the nation mourning. With dozens injured and one confirmed dead, this tragic incident raises critical questions about military flight safety protocols and airspace regulation over civilian areas.
