Punjab PDMA Issues Flood Warning for Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi Rivers and Major Cities

LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a serious flood warning for the Chenab, Jhelum, and Ravi rivers and nearby drains, urging people and local authorities to prepare for possible urban flooding and flash floods this week.

According to the PDMA, there could be an extraordinary rise in water levels in rivers from July 7 to 9, putting several regions at risk.

High Flood Alert for Chenab River

The PDMA has specifically warned about the danger of high flood levels at Maralla Headworks on the Chenab River. There is also a risk of medium to high floods in drains that flow near the Ravi and Chenab rivers, which could threaten nearby villages and farmland.

Flash Flood Risk in Dera Ghazi Khan

In addition to the rivers, the PDMA said there is a risk of flash floods in the Rod Kohis, or mountain streams, in Dera Ghazi Khan. These fast-flowing channels can flood quickly after heavy rainfall, endangering lives and livestock in surrounding communities.

Urban Flooding Warning for Major Cities

The PDMA also warned of possible urban flooding in major Punjab cities, including:

  • Lahore
  • Gujranwala
  • Sialkot
  • Rawalpindi

Urban flooding can block roads, damage property, and disrupt daily life, so residents have been urged to stay alert and follow safety instructions.

Emergency Preparations Ordered

To tackle any emergency, the PDMA has issued a clear alert to Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and WASA authorities. The Rescue 1122 service has been directed to stay ready, stock up on fuel, and prepare emergency teams in advance.

The PDMA has asked officials to make sure that people living near riverbanks are moved to safer areas, and that food and clean water supplies are arranged for affected communities.

Important: “People should be kept aware of the developing situation along with supply of food and clean water,” the PDMA said in its statement.

What You Should Do

✔️ Stay updated with local weather reports.
✔️ Avoid unnecessary travel near rivers, drains, and low-lying areas.
✔️ If you live near riverbanks, move to safer ground as soon as possible.
✔️ Keep emergency supplies like food, clean water, medicines, and important documents ready.
✔️ Follow Rescue 1122 instructions and contact local authorities in case of an emergency.

Stay Safe, Stay Informed

The situation is developing, so everyone living in flood-prone areas should remain alert and cooperate with rescue teams. The PDMA and local administration are working round-the-clock to keep people safe — but your awareness and quick action can save lives too.
