The UAE is getting ready to host the world’s biggest self-driving car race in April 2024, and there’s a possibility that viewers might witness the first-ever flying car race. Maca Flight, a French company specializing in hydrogen-powered flying racing cars, aims to establish a genuine flying car championship. The UAE is considered a top candidate to host these futuristic races.
Maca Flight, operating independently after separating from European aircraft manufacturer Airbus, unveiled its flying racing car at CES 2023. Priced at $2 million (Dh7.34 million), the single-seater flying car can reach a maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour with zero CO2 emissions. During races, it hovers just 4-5 meters above the ground, providing spectators with an exciting view.
Christian Pineau, CEO of Maca Flight, anticipates 8 to 10 participants in the inaugural flying car race. The company has partnered with Red Bull, known for its involvement in extreme sports, to advance the project. Pineau aims to establish a flying car championship by the end of 2025, with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain expressing interest.
Presales for the hydrogen-powered flying racing car, set to begin in a couple of months, follow the completion of the first full-scale demonstrator. Maca Flight plans to provide training for buyers, including a dedicated race track and simulator to enhance their skills.
As part of the regulatory process, Maca Flight is seeking approvals from French regulatory authorities. Pineau emphasizes the importance of obtaining necessary certifications to avoid complications, stating that the company is pre-approved to fly over restricted areas without passengers other than the pilot. The goal is to ensure smooth operations and overcome potential hurdles faced by other projects.
