China Builds World’s Largest Earthquake Early Warning System

In a significant stride towards earthquake preparedness and public safety, China has announced the completion of the main construction phase of its earthquake early warning system. The final completion and acceptance of this ambitious project, which began in the 1990s, is expected by the end of this year. The groundbreaking system, being hailed as the world’s largest earthquake early warning system, aims to provide crucial seconds of advance notice to the public, potentially saving countless lives.

Unprecedented Early Warning Capabilities:

Under the leadership of Min Yiren, head of the China Earthquake Administration (CEA), the country has made substantial progress in constructing the earthquake early warning and instant seismic intensity reporting system. Since 2018, key regions prone to seismic activity have been the focus of the construction efforts. The system’s primary objectives are twofold: to alert the public about impending earthquakes with a countdown in seconds, and to report the intensity of seismic events within a minute of their occurrence.

By significantly reducing the delivery time of earthquake information, China’s earthquake early warning system is expected to revolutionize earthquake preparedness. Min Yiren emphasized during a press conference that this monumental achievement will bridge the gap between the occurrence of an earthquake and the dissemination of critical information from one minute to just a few seconds.

Life-Saving Potential:

The research published by the Northwestern Seismological Journal in 2002 supports the significance of early warning systems in mitigating casualties. Even a few seconds of advance notice can make a substantial difference. According to the study, awareness of an earthquake three seconds ahead could save 14 percent of casualties, while 10 seconds of warning could save 39 percent. A remarkable 63 percent of casualties could be prevented with a 20-second warning time.

Widespread Alert Mechanisms:

The newly completed system is designed to disseminate alerts through various devices, ensuring broad coverage and maximum effectiveness. Televisions, mobile phones, radio broadcasts, and other warning terminals will all be utilized to reach the public promptly. This multi-channel approach will enable individuals in quake-prone areas to receive timely notifications, allowing them to take necessary precautions or seek safety.

Extensive Coverage and Trial Operations:

China’s earthquake early warning system currently spans over 15,000 monitoring stations, comprising three national centers, 31 provincial centers, and 173 prefectural and municipal information release centers. To gauge the system’s functionality and effectiveness, a trial operation for public early warning services has been implemented in several quake-prone areas. These include Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in southwest China, Beijing and Tianjin municipalities in north China, Hebei Province, and Fujian Province in east China.
