Pakistan ranked as severely affected country in GHI

Pakistan has been ranked among the countries most severely affected by hunger, according to the Global Hunger Index (GHI) report released in October 2022. With a score of 26.1, Pakistan is categorized as a severely affected country, marking an increase in hunger levels and a worsening of the food security situation in the country.

The report indicates that the average Pakistani household spends 50.8% of their monthly income on food, while 36.9% of the population suffers from a lack of food security. The continuous decline in purchasing power has pushed people towards starvation, with 20.5% of the population facing severe food shortages. The report also highlights that 18% of children under the age of five are malnourished, which is a significant concern for the country’s future generations.

According to the WHI report, children aged 6 to 23 months in Pakistan are deprived of nutritionally rich food. This is a worrying trend that indicates the need for urgent action to ensure that all children have access to nutritious food, which is essential for their growth and development.

The report also reveals that almost 40% of children at the age of five in Pakistan are malnourished, while 29% are underweight. Malnutrition in early childhood can lead to long-term health problems, such as stunted growth, cognitive impairment, and a weakened immune system, which can have severe consequences on their overall well-being and future prospects.

The current situation in Pakistan is a cause of concern for both the government and the international community. The government must take immediate steps to address the problem of hunger and malnutrition in the country. This includes increasing access to food, especially in remote and underdeveloped areas, improving healthcare facilities, and investing in education to raise awareness about the importance of a balanced diet and good nutrition.

Additionally, the international community can play a vital role in supporting Pakistan’s efforts to address hunger and malnutrition. Donor agencies and international organizations can provide financial assistance and technical expertise to help the government implement effective policies and programs to combat hunger and malnutrition.

It is also essential to recognize that hunger and malnutrition are complex problems that require a multi-pronged approach. Addressing the root causes of hunger, such as poverty, inequality, and lack of access to resources, is critical to achieving lasting solutions. Investing in sustainable agriculture and infrastructure can also help boost food production and distribution, ensuring that everyone has access to nutritious food.

The Global Hunger Index is a reminder that hunger and malnutrition are not only humanitarian issues but also have significant economic and social costs. The report states that hunger and malnutrition cost Pakistan approximately 4% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), equivalent to approximately $14 billion annually. This highlights the urgent need for action to address hunger and malnutrition in Pakistan and underscores the importance of sustained efforts to achieve food security and improved nutrition for all.

It is a complex problem that requires a coordinated and sustained effort to achieve lasting solutions. By working together, we can ensure that everyone has access to nutritious food, leading to a healthier and more prosperous Pakistan.
