Another round of talks between coalition govt, PTI due today

ISLAMABAD:  Another round of talks between the coalition government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for the general election are due today.

The negotiations would be held at the Senate Secretariat from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, the Chairman of the Senate, stated that the modification was necessitated by the busy schedules of members of the negotiation committees on both sides.

He expressed optimism that the new timing for the negotiations would promote productive discussions between the government and PTI to resolve urgent issues.

A day earlier, the PML-N leaders strongly opposed the negotiations with the PTI raising different questions in this regard.

After two senior members of the federal cabinet, Shah Mahmood Qureshi demanded a “clear answer” from the government alliance after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the government opposed negotiations. He also threatened to take to the streets if the negotiations failed.

This warning was issued in response to the statements made by Muslim League (N) leader Javed Latif and Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, given in response to PTI leader Imran Khan’s statements. Both leaders of the Muslim League (N) had opposed talks with the opposition party based on various reasons.

Javed Latif had said, “In my opinion, there should be no negotiations with terrorists and those who conspire against the state, and talking to Imran Khan is equivalent to negotiating for national interests.”

On the other hand, Khawaja Asif had claimed that the government wanted to hold elections on time, that is, in October, but Imran Khan is restless for elections before the retirement of the Chief Justice.

Moreover, they had also referred to negotiations under the leadership of Ishaaq Dar as “useless practice.”
