Winter Storm Finn Caused Widespread Damage to the Northeast

Winter Storm Finn unleashed its fury on the Northeast on Tuesday night, delivering high winds and coastal floods that prompted Suffolk County officials to draw comparisons to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy a decade ago.

In the Fire Island Pines community, Finn wrought havoc, demolishing sand dunes and leading to the suspension of ferry services. Many marinas are submerged due to the storm’s impact, exacerbating the challenges faced by local communities. Despite these obstacles, town and county officials have collaborated effectively to coordinate the storm response.

Numerous beaches along the south shore now bear the brunt of severe erosion, and the storm’s powerful impact brought down trees, causing power outages for approximately 25,000 PSEG Long Island customers. On Fire Island, a popular vacation destination accessible only by ferry, power had to be cut off by PSEG Long Island to facilitate repairs to a flooded substation.

Residents of Fire Island, already grappling with the aftermath of a recent storm, remain vigilant as forecasts predict a potential third storm this weekend.

The storm surge took a toll on roads in the Town of East Hampton, leaving approximately 400 residents without power on Wednesday. Amidst the challenges, a viral video captured a father’s determined morning routine as he navigated flooded streets on Long Island, paddleboarding his children to school.

The man is seen paddling his children over several inches of floodwater in the roadway in this video, which was taken by Lindenhurst homeowner Fred Zappolo, who shared it with Storyful.

The Northeastern communities now face the aftermath of Winter Storm Finn, with concerns over coastal erosion, power restoration, and a watchful eye on upcoming weather predictions for potential further impact. The coordination between officials remains crucial as they address the diverse challenges posed by the storm, from damaged sand dunes to submerged marinas and suspended ferry services.
