Wasim Akram Calls for Complete Overhaul of Pakistan Cricket Team

Legendary pacer Wasim Akram has expressed his disappointment with Pakistan’s performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, calling for a complete overhaul of the team. This reaction follows Pakistan’s narrow six-run defeat to India, which marks their second loss in the tournament.

Akram criticized the current attitude of Pakistani players, suggesting they believe poor performance won’t affect their positions while only coaches face the consequences. “It is time to keep the coaches and change the entire team,” he remarked in a recent interview.

He also took issue with the team’s batting strategy, accusing players of failing to adapt to the match conditions and making poor shot selections. Akram singled out Iftikhar Ahmed and Mohammad Rizwan for their lack of match-winning intent.

“Iftikhar Ahmed only knows one shot on the leg side. He has been part of the team for years but still doesn’t know how to bat effectively. I can’t go and teach game awareness to Fakhar Zaman,” Akram said, emphasizing the need for better tactical understanding among the players.

Akram also criticized Rizwan for not handling Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling more cautiously, noting that Rizwan showed a lack of game awareness. “They have been playing cricket for 10 years, and I can’t teach them. Rizwan has no game awareness,” he stated.

The former captain hinted at internal discord, mentioning that some players, possibly referring to skipper Babar Azam and pacer Shaheen Afridi, are not on speaking terms since Afridi was replaced by Azam as captain. “There are players who don’t want to talk to each other. This is international cricket, and you play for your country. Make these players sit at home,” Wasim Akram said.

Pakistan’s latest defeat to India occurred in a low-scoring match in New York, where the team bowled out India for 119 in 19 overs. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf each took three wickets, but the Pakistani batters failed to chase the modest target, finishing at 113 for seven in their 20 overs.

This loss has left Pakistan winless in their two matches so far in the T20 World Cup 2024, further intensifying calls for significant changes in the team.
