German police have detained a 26-year-old Syrian man following a knife attack in Solingen, a city in Germany. The attack, which occurred on Friday during a festival in a market square celebrating Solingen’s 650-year history, resulted in three deaths and eight injuries. The suspect, who turned himself in late on Saturday, is being investigated for possible connections to the Islamic State (ISIS).
The suspect, identified by federal prosecutors as Issa Al H., is alleged to have committed the attack due to his radical Islamist beliefs. Prosecutors claim that Al H. aimed to kill as many people as possible whom he viewed as non-believers, stabbing them repeatedly in the neck and upper body.
The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, describing Al H. as a “soldier of the Islamic State” in a statement posted on its Telegram account. The group also released two videos: one showing a masked man pledging allegiance to the Islamic State leader, and another featuring a blurred face purportedly speaking moments before the attack.
The attack has sparked a response from politicians and officials. Friedrich Merz, leader of the opposition centre-right CDU party, has called for a halt on admitting refugees from Syria and Afghanistan, declaring, “It’s enough!” According to Der Spiegel magazine, the suspect arrived in Germany in late 2022 and had applied for asylum.
