Thousands of dead fish have been found on the shores of Keamari in Karachi due to severe storms and heavy rainfall. The bad weather has mixed sea sediment with water, causing pollution in the mangrove areas and coastal regions of Karachi Harbor.
Among the dead fish are species like mullet and spotted skate. According to WWF Technical Director Maaz Khan, the fish deaths are a “local event and not widespread.” Fishermen are collecting the dead fish to sell as feed for poultry, but Khan warns that these fish, having died from pollution, may be unsafe to use.
A cyclonic storm is predicted to hit the southern coast soon, bringing heavy rains and possible flooding, according to the Sindh province disaster authority. Since the monsoon season began in July, over 300 people have died across Pakistan from rain-related incidents. Most of these deaths have occurred in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and neighboring Punjab. The causes include lightning, electrocution, and the collapse of mud or poorly built houses, according to a statement from Punjab’s disaster management agency.
