Russia has launched another wave of strikes on Ukraine, just a day after carrying out one of its largest air assaults since the war began. On Tuesday, air raid alarms were triggered across Ukraine as Russian aircraft fired hypersonic missiles, and mass drone attacks were reported.
Ukraine’s air defense forces warned that the entire country was at risk from ballistic missile attacks. The Russian defense ministry confirmed that long-range air and sea-based precision weapons were used to strike power stations and other infrastructure in various regions, including Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, and Odesa.
These recent strikes follow an attack from Sunday night to Monday morning, which resulted in at least six deaths and dozens of injuries as more than half of Ukraine’s regions were hit by drones and missiles. The strikes damaged power infrastructure, leading to blackouts in many cities and disruptions to water supplies.
U.S. President Joe Biden condemned the attacks, calling them “outrageous” and reaffirming Washington’s support for Ukraine’s energy grid. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy also criticized the strikes, describing them as “cowardly missile and drone attacks on civilian infrastructure.”
Explosions have also been reported in Kyiv, Sumy, Khmelnytsky, and Mykolayiv regions. Ukrainian monitors detected the launch of several hypersonic Kinzhal (Dagger) ballistic missiles, which are difficult for air defenses to intercept.
These renewed attacks by Moscow are seen as an effort to regain control of the conflict after Ukraine’s recent territorial gains in Russia’s Kursk region. Since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. In recent months, it has intensified its campaign against the power grid, leading to frequent blackouts across the country.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Western allies, including the UK, the US, and France, to change their rules and allow Ukraine to use their weapons to strike deeper inside Russia. Currently, Ukraine is permitted to use some Western weapons against targets inside Russia, but not long-range weapons. Zelensky argued that more could be done to protect lives if European air forces collaborated with Ukraine’s air defense systems.
