The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) has issued a warning about the potential for an “exceptionally high level” of flooding in River Chenab, as heavy rainfall is expected between July 8 and 10. The FFD has attributed the increased flood risk to a deep trough of westerly waves, strong monsoon currents, and an approaching upper air circulation. While the flood situation in rivers Ravi and Sutlej will depend on releases from India, the FFD cautions that high to very high levels of flooding are also expected in the nullahs of rivers Ravi and Chenab.
According to the FFD, the convergence of meteorological factors, including the deep trough of the westerly wave, strong monsoon currents, and upper air circulation, is expected to result in widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy falls at scattered places in the upper catchments of rivers Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab. As a consequence, River Chenab is likely to experience a very high to exceptionally high level of flooding. However, the flood situation in rivers Ravi and Sutlej will be contingent upon water releases from India.
In addition to the anticipated flooding in River Chenab, the FFD has cautioned that the nullahs of rivers Ravi and Chenab are also prone to high to very high levels of flooding. These areas face an increased risk due to heavy rainfall and the potential for overflowing water channels. The authorities are advised to closely monitor the situation in these regions and take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of flooding.
Heavy Rainfall and Loss of Life in Punjab
On Wednesday, Lahore City witnessed an extraordinary amount of rainfall, with over 290mm recorded in two spells within a span of 10 hours. This downpour broke a 30-year-old record in the provincial capital. The incessant rain severely disrupted daily life, causing widespread waterlogging and rendering major roads and connecting streets impassable. Tragically, seven individuals lost their lives in various incidents across the region.
One of the devastating incidents occurred in Kamoki, Gujranwala district, where a family experienced a roof collapse due to heavy rain. Waris Masih and his family were asleep in their house when a room’s roof gave way, burying them under the debris. The injured family members were rescued by neighbours and rushed to a nearby hospital. Sadly, Waris’s wife, Hanifa, son Adil, and daughter Laiba succumbed to their injuries, adding to the human toll caused by the severe weather.

In light of the imminent flood risk and the tragic loss of life, authorities are urged to take immediate action to address the situation.
