Record-breaking heatwave hits US, Europe, and China

Record-breaking heatwaves are sweeping across the United States, Europe, and China, signaling the dire consequences of a warming climate. The scorching temperatures, predicted to reach unprecedented levels this weekend, have prompted extreme heat advisories for over 100 million Americans. Areas particularly affected include Arizona, California, Nevada, and Texas. Similarly, countries in Europe such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Poland are also enduring blistering heat.

In Europe, the European Space Agency has warned that temperatures on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia may skyrocket to 48 degrees Celsius (118.4 degrees Fahrenheit), potentially setting a new record for the hottest temperatures ever recorded on the continent. Even North Africa is grappling with intense heat, as the Moroccan meteorological service issued an extreme heat red alert for the southern regions of the country.

China is not exempt from this heatwave, with Beijing and other regions experiencing sweltering temperatures. In fact, a major Chinese power company reported a record-breaking single-day power generation on Monday. These soaring temperatures are part of a worrying trend, as last month marked the hottest June on record, according to NASA and the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

The World Meteorological Organisation’s Secretary-General, Petteri Taalas, cautions that extreme weather events resulting from climate change are becoming the new normal. The impacts of excessive heat are severe, with the WMO highlighting it as one of the deadliest meteorological phenomena. In Europe alone, a recent study estimates that over 61,000 people died from heat-related causes during last year’s record-breaking summer.

Climate scientists attribute the higher temperatures this year to the climate pattern known as El Niño. These events, occurring every two to seven years, bring warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific near the Equator, lasting approximately nine to 12 months. The effects of global warming are already apparent, as North America has witnessed a series of extreme weather events, including uncontrolled wildfires in Canada causing widespread air pollution in the United States and devastating floods in Vermont due to heavy rainfall.

Furthermore, the southern United States has been enduring persistently high temperatures for weeks. Climate scientist Daniel Swain predicts that Death Valley’s temperature may equal or surpass the record for the hottest air temperature ever reliably measured on Earth. The WMO’s official record stands at 56.7 degrees Celsius (134 degrees Fahrenheit), measured in Death Valley in 1913. However, Swain argues that temperatures of 54.4 degrees Celsius (130 degrees Fahrenheit) recorded in 2020 and 2021 are more accurate.

The warming trend is not limited to the atmosphere; the oceans are also affected. Water temperatures off the southern coast of Florida have surpassed 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit), posing risks to marine life and the fishing industry. Similarly, the Mediterranean is expected to experience exceptionally high surface temperatures in the coming days and weeks, exceeding 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas.

In a concerning development, Antarctic sea ice reached its lowest recorded level for the month of June. These alarming trends reflect the global average temperature increase of nearly 1.2 degrees Celsius (1.9 degrees Fahrenheit) since the mid-1800s, leading to more intense heatwaves, severe droughts, and fiercer storms fueled by rising sea levels.

Petteri Taalas of the WMO emphasizes the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The current heatwave serves as a stark reminder of the need to act swiftly and decisively in tackling this global challenge.
