ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif criticised recent decisions made by the Supreme Court, stating that they have made a mockery of the Constitution.
The prime minister expressed concern that the fate of the nation is being determined by strange decisions that undermine the rule of law. He expressed these views while addressing the coalition parties meeting on Wednesday.
The prime minister’s comments were made in response to a recent ruling by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, which declared the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to postpone Punjab elections until October 8 unconstitutional, and ordered that polling be held on May 14 instead.
Shehbaz Sharif noted that his government had held several meetings with cabinet members and parliamentary representatives to discuss the evolving situation. He expressed confusion over the decision-making process, noting that members of the three-judge bench had previously recused themselves from the case, only to rejoin later on.
In response, the prime minister announced that the law minister would table another resolution in Parliament on Thursday, in an effort to address the situation and develop a more robust response.
PM Shehbaz Sharif’s comments have added fuel to an already contentious situation, with many questioning the independence and impartiality of the judiciary. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the ECP’s decision to postpone elections has been met with widespread criticism, with many arguing that it undermines the autonomy of the election commission.
The situation in the country remains tense, with opposition parties accusing the government of attempting to interfere with the election process. Many fear that the ongoing dispute could lead to further unrest and instability in the country, at a time when Pakistan is already grappling with a host of economic and political challenges.
