PTI’s Yasmin Rashid arrested again after freed by LHC

LAHORE: Dr Yasmin Rashid, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Punjab President and former Punjab health minister, has been arrested again by Lahore police in connection with the riots that followed the arrest of PTI chief Imran Khan on May 9, 2023.

This happened despite the Lahore High Court’s decision to suspend the detention of 17 women, including Dr Rashid. She was apprehended at Services Hospital, where she was being treated, in connection with three cases related to terrorism and other serious charges registered at Sarwar Road, Gulberg, and Shadman police stations. Although Dr. Rashid’s health was deteriorating, the police decided to keep her in custody at the hospital.

Despite the court order for the release of the 17 women, including Dr. Rashid, they were rearrested in different cases shortly after their release. PTI leaders, including Asad Umar, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Fawad Chaudhary, Ejaz Chaudhary, Ali Mohammad Khan, Jamshed Iqbal Cheema, and Omar Sarfaraz Cheema, are still incarcerated, and the PTI has demanded their immediate release.

Dr. Rashid was arrested on May 12, 2023, under section three of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO), along with other party leaders. This follows increasingly violent protests by party supporters, leading to raids in Islamabad and Lahore. The situation remains tense, and further developments are expected in the coming days.

The arrest of Dr. Yasmin Rashid, despite the high court’s order, highlights the continuing crackdown on the PTI by the government. The party has demanded the immediate release of all incarcerated senior members and peaceful protesters.
