PTI’s Shah Mahmood Qureshi arrested again after release from Adiala Jail

  • Shah Mahmood Qureshi of PTI was arrested once more after being released from Adiala Jail.

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi re-arrested shortly after release from the Adiala Jail

Moments after being released from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi was rearrested on Tuesday. The arrest took place in conjunction with the immediate rearrest of party leader Musarrat Jamshed Cheema, who was also released earlier.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) had earlier ordered Qureshi’s release after he provided an undertaking in which he pledged to refrain from inciting agitation and provoking party workers. The court had granted him freedom based on this assurance.

Qureshi was one of the prominent PTI leaders who had been arrested in Islamabad within 24 hours of the outbreak of violent protests by PTI workers following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 9 in the Al-Qadir Trust case. The police had arrested Qureshi on charges related to rioting and arson incidents in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

However, prior to his arrest, Qureshi had urged PTI workers to continue their struggle for “true freedom” in Pakistan. He emphasized his role as Pakistan’s former foreign minister, defending the country’s interests in various forums, and highlighted his four decades of practical experience in politics. Qureshi expressed no regrets and asserted that he had not made any provocative statements that could result in legal action. He remained confident that the PTI’s movement would ultimately achieve its objectives.

On May 18, the IHC nullified the arrest orders against Qureshi and directed his release. However, the court imposed a condition that Qureshi must provide a written undertaking assuring that he would abstain from participating in violent protests and refrain from inciting any form of violence in the future.
