Protests Erupt in India After Doctor’s Rape and Murder in Kolkata Hospital

Activists and doctors across India are holding protests to demand justice for a young female doctor who was raped and murdered while on duty at a hospital in Kolkata. The protests, organized under the slogan “Reclaim the Night,” are spreading throughout West Bengal, Delhi, Karnataka, Odisha, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and other regions.

The tragic incident shocked the nation when the body of the 31-year-old doctor was discovered on August 9 at a state-run teaching hospital in Kolkata. Initially, the hospital administration reported the death as a suicide, but an autopsy later revealed that she had been raped and murdered.

In response, thousands of doctors have marched through Kolkata, calling for better security measures and a thorough investigation. The Kolkata High Court has since transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), marking a significant step towards justice for the victim.

The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has announced a nationwide suspension of elective medical services in protest against violence and to demand protection for healthcare workers. One of the key demands is the implementation of the Central Protection Law for healthcare workers against violence, a bill that was proposed in Parliament in 2022 but has not yet been passed.

Protests have quickly spread across the country. In Kolkata, tensions escalated when protesters were attacked by an angry mob that threw stones and tried to force their way into the hospital where the murder occurred. According to one doctor, the police did not intervene during the violence.

The incident has drawn nationwide attention to the broader issues of sexual violence and women’s safety in India, underscoring the urgent need for stronger protections for both women and healthcare workers.
