PIC implants first pulmonary valve in teenager without cut

PESHAWAR, Jun 08 – The Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC) has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully performing the first-ever Pulmonary Valve Implantation procedure without a surgical incision in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This groundbreaking achievement has brought new hope to children suffering from complex heart diseases in the province. Prof Dr Ijaz Hussain, Head of Pediatric Cardiology at PIC, led the team in performing the procedure on a 17-year-old patient who had been experiencing shortness of breath and palpitations due to post-Op TOF (Tetralogy of Fallot).

A Lasting Solution for a Complex Case:

The patient had previously undergone three surgeries in Peshawar, Lahore, and India in 2006, 2008, and 2010 respectively. However, after the third surgery, the patient’s pulmonary valve was damaged, leading to signs of valvular insufficiency. Faced with the challenge of addressing this complex case, Dr Ijaz Hussain and his team had to carefully consider the available options. They ultimately decided to offer the patient a noninvasive percutaneous pulmonary valve replacement as an alternative to open-heart surgery due to the high risk associated with the previous surgeries.
